forest dependency and its implication for protected areas management: a case study from kasane forest reserve, botswana

چکیده
conservation of biodiversity in protected areas will be more challenging if local communities are heavily dependent on them for various products and subsistence needs. this study estimated forest dependency and identified factors influencing dependency for households living around kasane forest reserve (kfr). data collected from 237 households were analyzed using logistic regression model. logistic regression suggests that forest dependency is positively and significantly associated with family size. however asset rich households were less dependent on forest resources. thus, policy makers need to consider the needs and economic options with the above components as an alternative strategy for forest protection so as to create a win-win relationship between conservation and local rural development options. apart from the biological threats of the forest such as fire and elephant damage, large areas of the forest (about 3060 hectares) have already been de-gazette for residential purposes of the kasane town and the expansion of the kasane airport in 2002.a sustainable management plan should use the forest to pay its own management costs and allow surrounding communities to benefit; hence, they can see the forest reserve as worthy of the protection.

The road network is an important element for sustainable forest ecosystem management. On the other hand, efficiency and quality of road design can be improved by considering of environmental and technical principles. Therefore, this study was performed to determine the capability of Arasbaran protected area for road passing and communication routes in order to use in the area management. For th...

The article analyses the possibilities of developing an integrated indicator and a model of the assessment of forests naturalness using the data from the database of mountainous spruce forests situated in the Western Carpathians of Slovakia. The article presents two variants of such a model, one based on discriminant analysis, while the second one using an additive approach. The analysis of the...

There are insufficient resources available to manage the world's existing protected area portfolio effectively, so the most important sites should be prioritised in investment decision-making. Sophisticated conservation planning and assessment tools developed to identify locations for new protected areas can provide an evidence base for such prioritisations, yet decision-makers in many countrie...
متن کاملeffects of reserve management on woody and ground flora diversity (case study: chamhesar pear forest reserve)
forest reserves are one of the most important approaches in ecosystem management in iran. in order to determine the effects of reserve management on plants diversity (woody plants and ground flora) in three zones (core zone, buffer zone, and transmission zone of chamhesar pear forest reserve), we mapped land form units. then 18 main sampling units (20×50=1000 m2) distributed randomly were chose...
متن کاملForest Loss in Protected Areas and Intact Forest Landscapes: A Global Analysis
In spite of the high importance of forests, global forest loss has remained alarmingly high during the last decades. Forest loss at a global scale has been unveiled with increasingly finer spatial resolution, but the forest extent and loss in protected areas (PAs) and in large intact forest landscapes (IFLs) have not so far been systematically assessed. Moreover, the impact of protection on pre...
متن کاملDo Protected Areas Reduce Forest Fragmentation? A Microlandscapes Approach
Conservation policies influence both the amount of habitat loss and patterns of habitat fragmentation. This paper develops a “microlandscapes” approach that combines fragmentation measures with quasi-experimental evaluation methods in order to assess the effects of policy on habitat fragmentation. As an application, the paper estimates whether and to what extent wildlife sanctuaries and nationa...
